Can I Take My Dog Hiking? And Does She Need a Leash?

Short answer: Yes, you can bring your dog on many local trails — but always check the rules, and always bring a leash just in case.

Even if you're on a trail where dogs are allowed off-leash, your pup needs to be under voice control — meaning she’ll come when called, no hesitation. If that’s not the case (yet!), go ahead and keep her leashed for her safety and others'. And remember, kids and wildlife don’t always mix well with free-roaming dogs — even friendly ones.

Leash Rules by Area:

Here’s a quick breakdown of Washington’s dog rules by land type:

National Parks (Mount Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades)

  • Dogs are not allowed on most trails.

  • Exception: Leashed dogs are allowed on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).

National Forests (like Okanogan–Wenatchee)

  • Dogs are generally allowed, including off-leash if under voice control.

  • Leashes required or dogs prohibited in certain areas:

    • Enchantments & Ingalls Lake Trail: No dogs allowed due to fragile ecosystems and heavy foot traffic.

    • Alpine Lakes Wilderness: Leashes required on most trails, especially those along I-90 and Hwy 2 near Stevens Pass.

    • Wenatchee–Okanogan NF: Some popular hikes are leash-only. Always read signs at the trailhead!

WA Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Land

  • Leashes required on nearly all trails.

Washington State Parks

  • Leashed dogs welcome, but not allowed on swimming beaches.

If you're ever unsure, err on the side of leashing. It keeps everyone — kids, hikers, and fur babies — safe and happy on the trail.
